Search for whether live wallpapers drain your battery and you will find hundreds of confident articles, most of which are describing Android and quietly assuming iPhone works the same way. It does not, and that single misunderstanding is the source of most of the bad advice.
What a Live Wallpaper Actually Is on iPhone
An iPhone live wallpaper is a Live Photo. That means a still image plus roughly a second and a half of frames on either side of it, stored together.
The important part is when those frames play. They play when you press and hold on the Lock Screen, and then the wallpaper settles back to a still frame. It does not loop. It does not animate while the phone sits on your desk. It does not run while you are on the Home Screen, because iOS never animates the Home Screen wallpaper at all.
So for the overwhelming majority of the time your wallpaper is on screen, a live wallpaper and a still photo are the same object doing the same thing: displaying one static frame.
That is the whole answer for iPhone. The cost is the handful of seconds per day when you actually hold your finger down, plus a slightly larger file sitting in storage.
Why Android Is Different
On Android, a live wallpaper is a service. It runs a rendering loop, it can animate continuously behind your home screen, it may respond to scrolling or touch, and some of them run a full graphics engine. That does draw real power, and on some poorly written ones it is significant.
This is why the advice does not port across. An article warning that live wallpapers destroy battery life is usually correct about a continuously rendering Android wallpaper and irrelevant to an iOS Live Photo that only moves when you hold it.
Third party wallpaper apps on iOS cannot change this. They export a Live Photo into your library and iOS handles it from there. No App Store app is allowed to run a background renderer painting your Lock Screen, so no wallpaper app can quietly drain your battery even if it wanted to.
What Does Drain Your Screen Budget

One hour of scrolling at full brightness costs more than every wallpaper decision you will make this year. If battery life is the goal, that is where the work is.
The Dark Wallpaper Question
This one has a genuine effect on OLED iPhones, which means iPhone X and later apart from the XR, 11 and the LCD SE models.
OLED pixels generate their own light, so a black pixel is simply off and draws almost nothing. Research on OLED phones has put the saving from dark content at roughly 3 to 9 percent of total battery at the brightness levels people actually use, climbing steeply only when the display is near maximum. It is real, it is measurable, and it is nowhere near the 40 percent figure that gets quoted from studies run at full brightness.
Two practical implications. A dark wallpaper on an OLED iPhone is a small free win, and the darker and less colourful the better, since a black background saves more than a dark blue one. And on an LCD iPhone the backlight is on at a constant level behind every pixel, so a black wallpaper and a white one cost exactly the same.
The Four Settings That Beat Any Wallpaper Change
Turn on Auto-Brightness and stop overriding it. In Settings, Accessibility, Display and Text Size. It is the highest impact battery setting on the phone and most people who disabled it years ago never turned it back on.
Try two days with Always On Display off. Settings, Display and Brightness. Since it keeps the panel lit at a low refresh rate whenever the phone is face up, the effect depends entirely on how your phone spends its day. Testing it is cheap.
Shorten Auto-Lock. Thirty seconds instead of five minutes removes a surprising number of minutes of pointless screen on time each day.
Check the actual data before changing anything. Settings, Battery, then tap the graph and switch to Show Activity. You get screen on time by hour and a per app breakdown. The item labelled Home and Lock Screen is your wallpaper related usage, and on most phones it is tiny. If something is genuinely draining your battery, this screen names it in under a minute, and it is almost never the wallpaper.
Where a Wallpaper Choice Does Cost You Something
Not battery, but two other things worth knowing.
Storage. A Live Photo holds video frames alongside the still, so a library of them takes noticeably more space than the same number of stills. Irrelevant on a 256 GB phone, not irrelevant on a 64 GB one.

Getting Wallpapers That Fit and Look Right
If you want animated wallpapers without any of the battery anxiety, the honest position is that on iPhone there is very little to be anxious about. The thing worth optimising is fit and quality, not power.

On iPhone, live wallpapers do not meaningfully drain your battery, because they are not running. They are a Live Photo that plays for a second when you press and hold, and sit as a still image the rest of the time.
The advice that says otherwise is describing Android, where live wallpapers really do render continuously. If you want longer battery life on an iPhone, turn Auto-Brightness back on, shorten Auto-Lock, test Always On Display for two days, and pick a dark wallpaper if you have an OLED model.
