Maxwell Maltz was a plastic surgeon. In 1960 he published Psycho-Cybernetics, a book about self image that went on to sell in enormous numbers.

Every day for twelve weeks they logged whether they did it and rated how automatic it felt, using an established self report measure of automaticity.

Three results matter.

Cue consistency. Habits are learned as context and response pairs. The practical implication is that you should not compare your progress on a hard habit to somebody else's progress on an easy one. Flossing and marathon training are not the same category of problem, and no single timeline covers both.

What This Changes About How You Start
