Open any photo app, tap the filter labelled Film or 35mm, and you get a slightly faded, slightly warm version of the same photo. It does not look like film. It looks like a photo with a filter on it, and most people can tell instantly without being able to say why.
The reason is that the film look is not an aesthetic. It is a set of physical behaviours from a specific chemical process, and a digital camera is engineered to do the opposite of nearly all of them. Once you know which five behaviours matter, you can rebuild them deliberately, in the right order, and the result stops reading as a preset.
The Five Things That Actually Make Film Look Like Film

Every convincing film edit is some combination of those five. Every failed one is a fade slider and a colour tint applied to all of them at once.
1. Highlight rolloff
Negative film has a characteristic curve with a long shoulder. As a bright area gets brighter, the film records less and less additional change, so highlights compress smoothly into white instead of hitting a wall. This is why a white shirt in sunlight on film keeps a sense of shape, and why the same shirt on a phone can turn into a flat white patch with a hard edge.
Digital sensors are linear until they are full, then they are simply full. There is no shoulder.
2. Colour crosstalk
Film stocks are not neutral and were never trying to be. Each one has its own signature. Kodak Portra keeps skin warm with restrained saturation. Ektar pushes saturation hard and stays clean. Kodak Gold leans yellow and golden. Fuji stocks are known for cooler, greener shadows.
Critically, that cast is not uniform across the frame. It differs by tonal range: warm in the highlights, cooler or greener in the shadows. Recreating that split is most of the work.
3. Grain that behaves like grain
Film grain is clumps of silver halide crystals. It is irregular, it varies in density across the tonal range, and it is not sitting on top of the image because it is the image. Digital noise is a different thing entirely, and phone processing is designed to eliminate it.
4. Lower micro-contrast
Older lenses and the emulsion itself produce softer local transitions. Modern phone pipelines apply sharpening and local contrast enhancement at capture, which is why iPhone photos can look slightly synthetic when pushed. Recreating film means taking some of that back off.
5. Halation
Light passing through the emulsion can reflect off the film base and expose the layers again from behind, producing a soft red glow around very bright points. Most films include an anti-halation layer to prevent this. CineStill 800T famously has it removed, which is why its street lights bloom red and why that specific look became shorthand for cinematic.
Before You Edit: Shoot For It
The biggest gains happen at capture, and no filter recovers what was lost there.
Expose for the highlights. This is the reverse of film advice you may have read. Colour negative film tolerates overexposure well, so film shooters often rate it a stop bright. Digital is the opposite: once a highlight clips, there is no data to roll off, and you are left painting a fake gradient into a flat white area. Tap the brightest important part of your frame and pull the exposure slider down slightly.
Use directional light. Film looks best in light that has a direction and a quality: late afternoon, window light, overcast diffusion, a single practical lamp at night. Flat midday overhead light gives you nothing for the contrast curve to work with, and no grain or colour cast will save it.
Turn down the computation where you can. Recent iPhones let you set a Photographic Style at capture, and on the newest models you can change it after the shot rather than having it baked in. A style with reduced tone and slightly reduced vibrancy gives you a flatter starting point, which is far easier to shape than an image the phone has already contrast-boosted for you.
Shoot in ProRAW if the phone offers it, for anything you plan to work on properly. It carries more highlight information and much less baked-in sharpening. The tradeoff is file size and a flatter, less immediately appealing image straight out of the camera, which is the point.

The Edit, In Order
Order matters here more than in most editing, because each step changes what the next one sees.
Step 1: Flatten the curve, then lift only the deep shadows
Reduce contrast slightly. Then lift the black point a small amount, and stop earlier than feels right. The number one giveaway of a film filter is a milky wash across the entire image because someone dragged a fade slider to 40 percent.
On real film the shadows retain density and colour. They do not turn into flat grey. Lift the darkest 10 percent of tones and leave the midtones alone.
If your app has a proper tone curve, this is where it earns its place: a gentle S with a soft shoulder at the top and a slight lift at the very bottom left corner reproduces both the rolloff and the shadow behaviour in one move.
Step 2: Split the colour by tonal range
Not one tint. Two, minimum.
Warm the highlights towards yellow or a soft orange. Small amounts. This is where most of the perceived warmth comes from.
Cool or green the shadows. Green in shadows reads as Fuji, blue reads more cinematic and modern. Again, small amounts. If you can see the tint as a colour rather than a mood, it is too strong.
Then desaturate slightly overall, and pull back reds and oranges a little further than everything else. Phone processing pushes skin tones warm and saturated, and film generally does not.

Step 3: Take the sharpening back off
Before you add grain, reduce sharpness, and reduce clarity or definition if your app has it. This feels wrong because the image gets visibly softer, and it is necessary. Grain over an over-sharpened, noise-reduced image is the single most common reason a film edit looks like two effects arguing.
Step 4: Add grain, correctly
Two controls matter and most apps only give you one.
Size is more important than amount. Grain that is too fine disappears at normal viewing size and only shows up when someone zooms in, which is exactly backwards. Real grain is visible in a print at arm's length. If your app has a size or roughness control, push it further than the default.
Amount should be enough to see and not enough to notice as an effect. Somewhere around a third to halfway on most sliders.
If you can control where grain lands, weight it towards the midtones and shadows and keep the brightest highlights cleaner. That matches how scanned negatives actually behave.
Step 5: Halation, sparingly
Only if you have bright points against dark: street lights at night, a window in a dark room, sun through leaves, a lit sign. A soft red or orange glow bleeding a few pixels outward around those points is the single most convincing film cue available, because almost nothing else produces it.
Applied to a bright daytime scene with no strong point highlights, it just makes the photo look hazy. This is a step to skip more often than to use.
Step 6: Crop to 3:2
A 35mm frame is 36 by 24 millimetres. The iPhone main camera gives you 4:3. Cropping to 3:2 changes the read of the photo before any colour work registers, and it costs one tap.
Do not add sprocket holes, a white border, or an orange date stamp. Those are signals of a filter app, not of film, and they make an otherwise good edit look like a novelty.
The Mistakes That Give It Away
Over-fading. Covered above and worth repeating, because it accounts for most failed film edits on its own.
Uniform grain on smoothed skin. The phone removed the texture, then you added a different texture on top. Reduce sharpening and any skin smoothing first.
One preset on everything. Real film shooters used one stock across a roll of scenes that suited it. A heavy Portra-style warm edit on a rainy grey street does not read as film, it reads as a mismatch. Match the treatment to the light in the frame.
Editing a photo that has no light in it. No film emulation rescues a flatly lit snapshot. Film photos that people admire were mostly taken in good light, which is a selection effect as much as a chemical one.
Chasing accuracy. Nobody is comparing your photo to a scanned negative. The goal is a mood that holds together, not a forensic match to a discontinued stock.

Which Photos Suit It
The film look flatters some subjects and actively hurts others.
Works well: portraits in soft or golden light, street scenes with texture, interiors with a single light source, film-friendly colour palettes of warm neutrals and muted greens, anything with visible atmosphere such as fog, rain or dust.
Works badly: product shots and anything where accurate colour is the point, high-detail landscapes where softness costs you the subject, screenshots and documents, bright flat midday scenes, and photos where you want the newest, cleanest possible look.
