The run is going perfectly. You are eight meters from your best score, and you can feel yourself starting to watch your own hands. Two taps later it is over, and the mistake was not a hard one. It was a tap you have made correctly a thousand times.
That is choking, and it is not what most people think it is. It is not nerves, it is not weak focus, and it is not a sign that you are bad at pressure. It is a specific, well documented failure that happens because of what your attention does when the outcome starts to matter.
Choking Is Not Just Being Nervous
The useful definition is narrow: performing worse than your established level specifically because the situation is important. That last clause is the whole thing. Being tired and playing badly is not choking. Being nervous and playing normally is not choking either.
Plenty of people feel calm and choke anyway, which is the first clue that the mechanism is not emotional arousal. Something else is going on, and it lives in attention.
Two Mechanisms, Two Different Failures
Research on performance under pressure has settled into two main explanations, and they do not predict the same failures.

The explicit monitoring account comes out of a long line of experiments where skilled performers were made self-conscious about their technique and immediately got worse, while beginners doing the same task were unaffected or even helped by attending to the steps. That asymmetry is the interesting part. Attention to mechanics helps when the skill is still being assembled and hurts once it has become a single fluid routine.
A one tap game sits squarely in the first row. There is no strategy to forget. There is a timed movement that either fires at the right instant or does not, and it is exactly the type of skill that suffers when you start narrating it.
Why the Last Ten Percent Is the Dangerous Part
At the start of a run you have nothing invested. The attempt is disposable, you play loosely, and loose is fast and accurate.
As the score climbs, the run stops being an attempt and starts being an asset. Losing something you already hold registers as worse than failing to gain it in the first place, which is one of the most reliable findings in decision research. The moment the record comes into view, you are no longer trying to score. You are trying not to lose.
That flip does three things at once, and none of them help:
- The outcome becomes salient. You start thinking about the number instead of the next input.
- Attention turns inward. Protecting something makes you check on it, and checking on a motor skill is the exact intervention that breaks it.
- Tempo changes. Most people speed up slightly under pressure without noticing, which is fatal in a game where the whole skill is timing.
This is also why the failure is so often stupidly simple. You do not lose a record run to the hardest section. You lose it to a routine input that you supervised for the first time in a hundred attempts.
The Tells
Choking announces itself before it lands, and the signs are physical and consistent enough to use as an early warning.
1. **You look at the score mid-run.** The single most common trigger, and the easiest to remove.
2. **You start narrating.** Any internal sentence about how well it is going is a symptom, including the positive ones.
3. **Your grip tightens.** Grip pressure rises under stress and directly degrades fine timing.
4. **You hold your breath.** Almost universal, and it tends to arrive with the tempo change.

None of these are the cause. They are the shape of attention moving from the task to the outcome, and noticing one gives you a real chance to redirect before the run ends.
What Actually Helps

The external focus point is the one worth internalising. A large body of motor learning work finds that attending to the effect of a movement, such as the target or the arc, produces better results than attending to the movement itself, such as your thumb or your wrist. Pressure pushes you toward the internal version by default, so having one prepared external cue gives your attention somewhere legitimate to go.
Pressure training is the other genuinely practical idea. Practising in mildly stressful conditions, rather than only in calm ones, appears to reduce the performance drop when real stakes arrive. In game terms that means deliberately playing runs where you have declared the target out loud beforehand, instead of only ever chasing records by accident.
What Does Not Help
- Trying to relax. Arousal is not the mechanism. Plenty of calm attempts fail and plenty of tense ones succeed, and chasing calm just adds another thing to monitor.
- Concentrating harder. Concentration is not a volume dial. Turning it up usually means turning it inward, which is the failure itself.
- Thinking about the technique that got you here. Reviewing your own mechanics mid-run is the textbook trigger. Save it for after.
- One enormous attempt. Loading everything onto a single run maximises the value of that run, which maximises the pressure. Volume dilutes it.
- Superstition dressed as routine. A routine works because it makes the moment ordinary. A ritual you believe controls the outcome does the opposite, because it raises the stakes of getting it right.

The fixes follow directly. Take the outcome out of view during the attempt, give your attention one external thing to hold onto, make the important moment look identical to an unimportant one, and play enough attempts that no single one is worth protecting.
