Setting a wallpaper on iPhone should be trivial, and yet a picture that looked perfect in your camera roll routinely ends up soft, cropped through someone face, or zoomed in far past where you wanted it. Almost all of that comes down to size and shape, and the fix is not the one most guides give you.
The common advice is to match your screen resolution exactly. That is the wrong target. Here is what actually works.
The Short Answer
Use a **vertical image at least as large as your screen resolution, in roughly a 19.5:9 shape, and ideally about 20 to 40 percent larger than the screen on each side**. For a current iPhone, something around 1440 x 3120 pixels is a comfortable sweet spot, and anything up to 2160 x 3840 is fine if you have the file.
The reason for the extra margin: iOS never displays a wallpaper at 1:1. It always crops and scales it, both when you first position it and again when it applies effects. Starting with a little more image than you need means the system has something to work with instead of stretching pixels.
Native Resolution by iPhone Model
This is the floor, not the target. If your image is smaller than the number in this table, it will be upscaled and it will look soft.

Two things worth noticing in that table.
First, the spread is small. The gap between the smallest modern iPhone and the largest is a few hundred pixels. One file at 1440 x 3120 comfortably covers every model on the list, which is why per model wallpaper packs are mostly marketing.
Second, the aspect ratio is identical across every model except the SE. That is the number that actually determines whether your image survives the crop.
Why Bigger Is Safer Than Exact
If you set a wallpaper that is precisely your screen resolution, you have zero slack. Every one of these operations eats into it:
- Repositioning. Pinching and dragging to frame the shot moves the image inside a fixed window. Once you zoom in at all, you are magnifying pixels.
- Perspective Zoom. When enabled, iOS renders the wallpaper slightly larger than the screen so it can shift as you tilt the phone. That parallax margin comes out of your image.
- Depth Effect on the Lock Screen. iOS lifts a foreground subject above the clock, which involves scaling and repositioning the layers relative to each other.
- StandBy and other secondary surfaces. The same image gets reused at different crops.
None of these are destructive on a 1440 pixel wide source. All of them are visible on an 828 pixel one.
Going the other direction, there is a real ceiling. A 6000 pixel wide photo is downsampled to at most 1320 pixels before it reaches the display, so you gain nothing visually and you pay for it in storage and in slightly slower Lock Screen rendering. Somewhere between 1.5x and 2.5x your screen width is the practical range.
Aspect Ratio Matters More Than Pixel Count
A 4000 x 3000 landscape photo is enormous and still makes a bad wallpaper, because iOS has to throw away roughly two thirds of the width to fit a tall screen. You do not get to choose which two thirds beyond a rough drag.
Modern iPhone screens are about 2.16 times taller than they are wide. Practical implications:
- Shoot vertical if the photo is destined for a wallpaper. Portrait orientation on the iPhone camera is already close to the right shape.
- Crop before you set, not after. Use the Photos editor to crop to a tall frame yourself so you control the composition instead of letting the positioning gesture decide it.
- Leave the subject off center vertically. The clock occupies the top third of the Lock Screen and the app icons cover most of the Home Screen. A face or focal point dead center is the one position guaranteed to be obscured.

What Actually Makes a Wallpaper Look Blurry
Resolution gets blamed for problems it did not cause. In order of how often they are the real culprit:
1. The file was compressed in transit. This is the big one. Sending an image over most messaging apps re-encodes it and can cut a 3 MB file to under 200 KB. Saving an image from a social feed gives you the platform display version, not the original upload. By the time it reaches your camera roll it may be a fraction of its stated size.
To check: open the image in Photos, swipe up or tap the info button, and read the actual pixel dimensions. That number is the truth. If it is lower than your screen resolution, no amount of positioning will make it sharp.
2. It is a screenshot. Screenshotting a wallpaper preview captures the screen, which means you get exactly screen resolution with zero margin, often with interface elements baked in. Screenshots make poor wallpapers by construction.
3. It was upscaled from something small. An AI upscaler or a "HD" version of a small source invents detail rather than recovering it. It usually reads as smeared or waxy rather than sharp, especially on skin and text.
4. Heavy compression in the original. A JPEG saved at low quality shows blocking in gradients, most visibly in skies and dark areas. On a wallpaper, which you look at dozens of times a day at close range, that banding is far more noticeable than it is in a photo you scroll past.
Where the Interface Eats Your Image
Sizing correctly is only half the job. Composition against the iOS interface is the other half.
- Top third of the Lock Screen belongs to the clock and the date. On most Lock Screen styles the clock is large and dominant.
- Bottom edge holds the two quick action buttons and the home indicator bar.
- Center of the Home Screen is fully covered by app icons and widgets. Only the gaps between icons show through, and the Home Screen also applies a blur by default.
- Dynamic Island area sits over the top center of the screen on Pro and recent standard models.
Practically, the parts of a wallpaper you actually see are the upper edges around the clock, the mid to lower band on the Lock Screen, and thin slices between Home Screen icons. Busy, high contrast images fight the interface in exactly those regions. Images with a clean gradient or a calm area behind the clock read as far more polished, which is why so many well designed wallpapers look almost empty when viewed flat.
A quick sanity check: set the wallpaper, then look at the Lock Screen and the Home Screen for ten seconds each before deciding. Nearly every wallpaper that fails, fails on the Home Screen rather than the preview.
File Format and Size
- HEIC is the iPhone native format and gives the smallest file at a given quality. Ideal if the source is already HEIC.
- JPEG is fine and universal. Save at high quality, not maximum compression, because gradients suffer first.
- PNG is lossless and useful for flat graphic wallpapers with hard edges or large blocks of solid color. It produces much larger files for photographic images with no visible benefit.
- Avoid WebP and AVIF as wallpaper sources unless you convert them first. iOS handles them but the conversion step can introduce another generation of compression loss.
File size itself is not a quality signal. A 500 KB well encoded HEIC at 1440 x 3120 will beat a 4 MB JPEG that was upscaled from a thumbnail.
Live and Video Wallpapers Are Different
Live and motion wallpapers do not follow the still image rules cleanly. They are short video or Live Photo files, so the relevant specs are frame dimensions plus duration and bitrate, and iOS is stricter about what it accepts. Frame size should still meet or exceed your screen resolution, but keeping clips short and reasonably compressed matters more, because the file gets decoded every time the Lock Screen wakes.

Quick Checklist
Before you set anything:
1. Is the image **vertical** and roughly 19.5:9?
2. Is it **at least** your screen resolution from the table above, ideally 1.5x it?
3. Did you check the **actual dimensions** in Photos rather than trusting where you got it from?
4. Is the focal point **out of the top third** where the clock lands?
5. Did you look at the **Home Screen**, not just the Lock Screen preview?
Five checks, about thirty seconds, and it removes almost every reason a wallpaper disappoints.
Getting Wallpapers That Are Already the Right Size
The tedious part of all of this is sourcing. Most images you find online are either landscape, compressed by whatever site served them, or sized for a desktop monitor, which is the opposite shape from a phone.

Match the shape first, exceed the resolution second, and stop treating 4K as a quality guarantee. A 1440 x 3120 vertical image with a calm area behind the clock will look better on any current iPhone than a 6000 pixel landscape photo that iOS has to butcher to fit.
