You drink a coffee because you are flagging. Forty minutes later you feel sharper. Two hours after that you are flatter than before you started, and you are staring at the cup wondering whether it did anything at all.

4. **Take the sugar out.** If your drink carries 30 g of it, you are managing two crashes and only one of them is caffeine.
5. **Eat something with protein at the dip.** Coffee as a lunch replacement guarantees an afternoon that goes badly, and the caffeine will take the blame for a missing meal.
6. **Use daylight and movement for the circadian dip.** Ten minutes outside beats a second cup for a trough that was arriving anyway, and it does not cost you that night.
