It starts as a dull ache at the base of the thumb or along the top of the forearm, usually late in the afternoon. You notice it, shake your hand out, and forget about it. A few months later it is there in the morning, it flares after any long day, and you have started typing in a slightly odd way to avoid it without ever deciding to.
Typing pain is not mysterious. It is a load problem: too much time in a mildly bad position, with too little variation, and the tissue that takes that load gets irritated. Which means the fix is also mechanical. Change the position, break the continuity, and give the tissue reasons to tolerate more.
First, Work Out What Kind of Pain You Have
Two different problems get called the same thing, and they need different responses.

The vast majority of typing complaints sit in the left column. That is good news, because load related tendon irritation responds well to setup changes and movement.
The right column is the one to take seriously. Numbness in that specific finger pattern, especially at night, is the classic description of median nerve compression at the wrist. So is weakness that shows up as dropping a mug rather than as pain.
See a clinician if any of these are true: numbness that wakes you at night, real weakness or clumsiness, symptoms after a fall or impact, visible swelling or heat, pain that is getting worse despite four to six weeks of change, or any loss of sensation that persists. Everything below is for ordinary use related soreness, not a substitute for an assessment.
Why Typing Irritates Wrists
Three factors multiply together, and only one of them gets attention.
Position. The muscles that move your fingers mostly live in the forearm, and their tendons pass through the wrist. Hold the wrist bent back, in extension, and those tendons run over a tighter corner for every keystroke. Add a sideways angle, which is what a wide keyboard with a number pad forces on your right hand, and you add a second bend.
Duration. A slightly imperfect position for ten minutes is nothing. The same position held for four hours without interruption is the actual injury mechanism. Static loading with no variation is worse for tissue than moderate loading with movement.
Force. Most people type far harder than the keyboard needs. Bottoming out every key, gripping the mouse, and holding tension in the forearm between bursts all add load that produces no extra words per minute.
Notice that none of these is about how much you type in total. It is about how you type, for how long, without a break. That is why people who type for a living for decades are often fine and someone who took on one intense three month project is not.
The Desk Fixes That Matter Most
Do these before you buy anything. Setup changes outperform gadgets, and they are free.
Get the keyboard low enough
The single most common error is a keyboard too high, which forces the wrists into extension and lifts the shoulders. Your elbows should sit at roughly 90 to 110 degrees with the upper arms hanging near vertical, and the keyboard should be at or slightly below that elbow height.
If your desk is fixed and too tall, raise the chair until the elbows are right, then put something under your feet. A footrest or a stack of books is a legitimate solution, not a compromise.
Flatten or negatively tilt the keyboard
Those little flip out legs on the back of a keyboard tilt it towards you and push your wrists further into extension. Almost nobody needs them. Keep the keyboard flat, or use a slight negative tilt where the back edge sits lower than the front, which lets the wrists sit closer to neutral.
Stop parking your wrists while you type
The forearms should be supported, ideally on the armrests or the desk surface, while the hands float over the keys and move as a unit. Anchoring the wrist on a hard desk edge and reaching with the fingers is the position that concentrates load exactly where it hurts.
Bring the mouse closer
A keyboard with a number pad pushes the mouse a long way to the right, which means every mouse movement happens with the shoulder abducted and the wrist twisted. A compact or tenkeyless keyboard is one of the few purchases that reliably helps, and it helps the shoulder as much as the wrist.
Type more lightly, and let go between bursts
Try typing at the minimum force that actuates the keys for two minutes. It feels strange at first and then usually feels better. Between sentences, take your hands off the keys entirely rather than hovering with tension. Hovering is still work.
Vary the input
Alternate between mouse and trackpad, use keyboard shortcuts to reduce mouse trips, and use dictation for long messages when the situation allows. Variation is the point. The tissue objects to sameness more than it objects to effort.
The Six Stretches Worth Doing
None of these should be painful. A stretch you feel as a mild pull is doing its job. A stretch that reproduces sharp pain or tingling is telling you to stop and get assessed. Hold each for 20 to 30 seconds and repeat twice, unless noted.
1. Wrist flexor stretch
Extend one arm straight in front, palm up. With the other hand, gently pull the fingers back and down towards the floor until you feel a pull along the underside of the forearm. Keep the elbow straight. This targets the muscles that curl your fingers, which do most of the work when you type.
2. Wrist extensor stretch
Same arm position, palm now facing down. Gently pull the hand down and towards you so the knuckles turn under, feeling the stretch along the top of the forearm. The extensors are the ones that hold your fingers up over the keys all day, which is why the top of the forearm is so often the sore part.
3. Prayer stretch
Palms together in front of the chest, fingers pointing up, elbows out. Lower the hands towards the waist while keeping the palms pressed, until you feel a stretch through both wrists. Stop before the palms start to separate. Then invert it: backs of the hands together, fingers pointing down, and raise the hands slowly for the opposite direction.
4. Tendon glides
Not a stretch, a mobility drill, and one of the most useful things on this list. Start with the fingers straight. Move through four shapes, holding each for three seconds: hook fist, fingers bent at the top two joints only, full fist, straight fist with the fingertips at the base of the palm. Do five to eight full cycles per hand. This moves the flexor tendons through their full excursion inside their sheaths, which is exactly the motion a day of small keystrokes never provides.
5. Median nerve glide
Do this gently, and only if it does not produce tingling. Arm out to the side at shoulder height, palm up, fingers pointing away from you. Slowly extend the wrist so the fingers point down towards the floor, then tilt your head away from that arm. Hold two seconds, return, repeat five times. This is a mobilisation, not a stretch. It should feel like a light pull, never electric.
6. Thumb and first finger release
Typing and phone use both load the thumb heavily. Hold the thumb and pull it gently away from the palm and back until you feel a stretch across the base. Then press your thumb into the fleshy muscle between the other thumb and index finger and hold for 20 seconds. Tenderness there is extremely common in people who use a phone a lot.
Frequency Beats Duration
If you take one thing from this piece, take this. A 30 second break every 45 to 60 minutes does more for typing pain than a 15 minute session at the end of the day.

The point of the micro break is not the stretch itself. It is interrupting four unbroken hours of the same static load, which is the thing actually irritating the tissue.

Things That Sound Helpful and Mostly Are Not
Wearing a brace all day. A night splint that keeps the wrist neutral while you sleep is a well established tool for nerve symptoms. A rigid brace worn through the working day lets you keep doing exactly what caused the problem, and it weakens the forearm over weeks. Use it as instructed, not as permission.
Buying an ergonomic gadget and changing nothing else. A vertical mouse or a split keyboard can genuinely help, and neither one does anything if you still work five hours without moving. Fix the hours and the position first, then decide whether you still need the hardware.
Complete rest. Rest calms an acute flare, and long rest deconditions the tissue and delays the return. What tendon problems respond to is modified load, meaning less of the aggravating pattern and more gentle movement, not zero.
Pushing through a sharp stretch. More range is not the goal. Comfortable, frequent movement is.
Where an App Fits
The honest description of what a stretching app does is that it removes the two reasons people stop: forgetting, and not knowing what to do next.

Typing pain is a load problem with a mechanical answer. Get the keyboard at or just below elbow height, flatten it, keep the wrists floating rather than parked, bring the mouse in, and type more lightly. Then break the four hour block with 30 seconds of movement every hour and run the six moves twice a day.
Most mild cases settle in one to three weeks once the pattern actually changes. If four to six weeks of real change produces nothing, or you have night numbness or genuine weakness, stop self managing and get it looked at. That is not being cautious, it is the difference between a habit problem and a nerve problem.
